Let me say something that might go against everything you were taught: you can never always be the bigger person.
Especially not with your parents. And the cost of trying is higher than it looks.
The role you were praised for
If you’ve spent your life being the strong one, the one who protects, provides, and holds it together for a parent who should have been holding it together for you, you’ve probably been praised for it your whole life.
“You’re so mature for your age.”
“I don’t know what I’d do without you.”
“You’re the only one I can count on.”
It sounded like love. It felt like being needed.
But somewhere along the way, a child became the adult in the room.
The hierarchy of time
Every family line has an order.
Those who came before you stand before you, and you stand behind them, supported by everything they carried and everything they passed down.
When you try to stand “bigger” than the ones who came before you, that natural flow locks up.
It’s like trying to force water to flow back up a mountain.
Taking on early, age-inappropriate responsibility also splits a child’s psyche.
You become an adult on the outside in order to survive, while your inner emotional development quietly freezes in place.
That’s why you can be so capable, so competent, and still feel like a small, unsupported child on the inside.
What it costs you
Your back is exposed.
When you stand in front of your parent to protect them, your own back is left completely open.
You don’t have the energetic backing of your lineage behind you.
That creates a permanent, subconscious fight-or-flight state: chronic exhaustion, burnout, and a feeling that life is one endless, heavy uphill climb.
You feel like a fraud. No matter how much you achieve, a quiet part of you feels like an imposter.
Systemically, you’re standing on a throne that was never yours.
You’re playing a role that doesn’t belong to you, so no amount of success ever feels earned.
You face the wrong way.
Life force and abundance flow down the line, from ancestors to parents to children.
The moment you turn around to fix or support your parent, your back turns away from your own future.
You can’t receive what’s meant for you, because you’re facing the wrong way.
It doesn’t stay at home
This energy follows you everywhere. It shows up in your career, your friendships, and your relationships.
The idea of “being the bigger person” quietly trains you to put everyone else’s needs first.
It can excuse bad behaviour, stretch your tolerance beyond what’s healthy, and lead to self-abandonment.
And because choosing yourself was never safe, you feel guilty every time you try.
The truth
Being the bigger person isn’t always maturity.
Sometimes it’s a role you were never meant to carry, and the cost is your own life force.
A question to sit with this week:
Where in your life do you feel out of balance, always giving, always holding, always understanding?
And what is the one thing you want to stop doing, starting now?
Somatic Body Map
The truth is, your body holds a far deeper record of your experiences than your conscious mind ever will.
Every moment of stress, loss, fear or overwhelm that was never fully processed doesn't disappear — it gets stored.
Explore how your body is holding on to unprocessed stress and emotions through the somatic body map.
If this resonated and you're curious about what your body might be carrying, a single session is always available as a starting point.
Sometimes one conversation is enough to begin hearing what's been trying to get through.
